The Idea Started in a Classroom

DryTote was created by Dave Cruickshank — a federal disaster responder with over 20 years of experience, a retired major crime detective, and a high school trades teacher. Dave wore a lot of hats. But it was in the classroom where DryTote was born.

Dave challenged his students to design, invent, or improve a product that could help people dealing with the aftermath of disasters. The kind of damage he'd seen on the job — not just the immediate destruction, but the mold, the rot, the moisture damage that quietly ruins everything left behind — was always on his mind.

His own idea was built around a simple frustration: the desiccant packs available on the market were designed for beef jerky pouches. They were tiny, single-use, and completely useless for anything that actually mattered — gun safes, storage bins, tool chests, hockey bags. Dave wanted something built for real life. Something that worked in the spaces people actually use. Something rechargeable, not disposable.

DryTote was that idea. And it turned out to be a good one.

What We Built and Why

A standard DryTote pack contains 100 grams of premium food-grade silica gel — the material that actually absorbs moisture from the air. That's roughly 20 to 100 times more capacity than the disposable packets you'd find elsewhere. It comes with a color-change indicator that tells you exactly when the pack needs to be recharged: blue means dry and active, pink means it's time for a 3-minute microwave session. Then it's good to go again.
